Port Jackson Bike Shuttle

Explore the Northern Coromandel at your leisure.

Such a great way to the explore the northern tip of Coromandel Peninsula, home to the Coromandel Coastal Walkway and some of the best coastal scenery New Zealand has to offer.

Join the 9.15 a.m. bike shuttle from our base in Colville. Either Bring Your Own Bike or Hire One of Ours! Electric or standard, the choice is yours.

With dropoff at Port Jackson campground at 10.30a.m., the rest of the day is yours to explore. Take a picnic, enjoy a swim, before biking the optional 14 km return journey into Fletcher Bay along the knarly cliff top road with views to Great Barrier Island.

Fletcher Bay is home to the one and only Coromandel Coastal Walkway. If you are keen for a hike then venture into the Shepherd’s Hut, the location of some of the best views of Sugarloaf, the Pinnacles and Beyond. This is a great out-and-back short walk of 4kms, well worth the effort.

Under your steam and when you are ready, head back to Port Jackson and join the gravel coast road beside the beautiful Hauraki Gulf. Totalling another 30kms this piece of coastline is receiving rave reviews. Under the shadows of Mt Moehau and the towering pohutukawa trees the scene is set for a stunning ride back to Colville.

This is a great ride for ebikers as the distance is well within the average battery range of many bike brands. There are just a couple of steeper hills along the way with the added bonus of amazing views from the summit.

The ride is on a quiet backcountry road and suits riders with average levels of fitness and intermediate riding ability.

Explore the tip of the Northern Coromandel from Port Jackson to Fletcher Bay. A short trek of seven kilometres each way but oh so scenic and well worth it while you are there.

Coastal Walkway Short Walk

Coastal Walkway Short Walk

Totally optional but well worth the effort. The views from here are fab!. Either lock the bike in Fletcher Bay and hike the out-and-back or ride in over the farm tracks.  Hike as much or as little as you like.

About those pohutukawa:-

Ancient pohutukawa trees line the thin ribbon of road, some up to one thousand years old. You can only ponder what they will have experienced on this piece of coastline from early Maori to vehicles and bikes powered by batteries!

Local tip: The trees flower anytime from October through to December. Many are covered in brilliant red flowers over this period an experience that enhances an already awesome ride.

The Magnificent Hauraki Gulf

Covering 4,000 km2, home to over 50 islands, seabirds, fish and whales, the Hauraki Gulf/Tīkapa Moana, is the gift that keeps giving.

With views from on high to biking just a few short metres away from the sea, you never know what you will see around the next corner.

The Granite Wharf

Approximately 10kms from Port Jackson is the historic granite stone wharf. A great place to stop for a break and share an important part of NZ’s history. Millions of tons of granite were moved from the Coromandel in the early 1900s for building purposes in many NZ locations as well as overseas. PS: the book is available to purchase locally.

Otautu Bay

Approximately 23kms from Port Jackson is the lovely sheltered spot of Otautu Bay. Just off to the right as you reach the Bay is the road to the old wharf. Super scenic and definitely worth the time to venture off the beaten track. Towards the end of the beach is a safe swimming spot, a nice way to end your ride with less than 6 kms till you reach Colville.
